Paragon FireFly Digital Kiln
Test Glazes with Digital Accuracy
Test glass and glazes in the FireFly Digital before firing production loads in a large kiln. Perfecting colors for larger work is faster and cheaper in a small test kiln than in a large kiln. Test glazes while you feel the momentum instead of when you have enough ware to fill your large kiln.
An Excellent Classroom Kiln
Because new teachers often inherit bags of unlabeled clay, many kiln loads have been ruined because the clay was fired to the wrong temperature. With your own classroom test kiln, you can fire small clay samples to determine the correct temperature. Your students can make gifts in time for a birthday or holiday instead of when the school’s large kiln is available.
Teachers are delighted to find that the FireFly Digital is relatively inexpensive. The kiln creates enthusiasm for the clay program, because students see their test results right away. And testing in a small kiln will vastly increase your students’ knowledge of glazes.
Good Choice for Beginners
The Paragon FireFly Digital fires rapidly with a digital Sentry Xpress controller at the precise rate and temperature you choose. The controller stores up to 4 custom programs in memory. The display shows the kiln temperature throughout firing and cooling in your choice of °F or °C. Program up to 8 segments, or steps, per firing. Duplicate the firing schedule of your large kiln. If you know the natural cooling rate of your large kiln, you can even program that cooling rate in the FireFly Digital.
You will never outgrow a small kiln. If you later buy a larger one, continue to use the small one for testing or small projects. A small test kiln is invaluable in solving ceramic glaze problems.
The Kiln Addiction
The heat of the kiln is magical and offers wonderful surprises. Stained glass, enamels, and ceramic glazes undergo a complete transformation in the kiln. Opening a kiln to view your treasures is a festive moment that you will never outgrow no matter how much experience you gain.
The firing results will thrill you. Create breathtaking glass bracelets and pendants in the 8" square x 4 1/2" high interior. Fire small glass casting molds and even drop molds. But you are not limited to glass. Fire porcelain or stoneware pendants and beads. Test glazes. The kiln has plenty of power to reach 2350°F (1287°C).
L-Shaped Notches Strengthen the Firing Chamber
The Paragon FireFly Digital is made of durable 2 1/2" thick insulating firebrick, which stores heat for slow cooling and safe annealing of smaller glass projects. The solid 2 1/2" thick firebrick top and bottom help seal in the heat.
The hinged lid is self-adjusting to compensate for expansion at high temperatures. The hinge includes a stop that holds the lid open and out of the way. Lift the lid with a handle on the front or a separate handle on the side.
To strengthen the firing chamber, the firebrick corners are fitted together with L-shaped notches. This type of joint lasts longer than the butted joint and the "picture frame" mitered joint found on competitive brands.
Long-Lasting Elements and Thermocouple
Dropped, recessed grooves protect the replaceable heating elements for longer life. Wires are fastened to the elements with heat-dissipating connectors refined and proven for decades in Paragon kilns. Rugged construction makes this little kiln a workhorse.
This kiln is built to last. Elements are coiled from the finest high-temperature wire available. The thermocouple, which senses the firing chamber temperature, is protected with a high-nickel stainless steel sheath for long life.
