Thunderegg Agate is formed within layers of volcanic ash and start as rough spheres, mostly about the size of a baseball. They usually contain centers filled with chalcedony look like ordinary rocks on the outside, but slicing them in half and polishing them often reveals intricate patterns and colors.
The most famous Thundereggs come from Oregon and a local native legend states that the thunder spirits lived on the highest reaches of Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. When they became angry at each other they threw these rocks at each other, hence the name Thunderegg.
