Antique Metal Clay Mold - Beady Eye

Our antique molds are hand crafted from the original antique element so you get a perfect impression. A mold is a great way to own the beauty of these collectibles without the investment of the original, and the sizes are just right for jewelry components.

We use a 100% silicone mold material that does not stick to metal clay, or any other type of clay, so no release is needed. Use precious metal clay, BRONZclay, copper clay, polymer clay, and ceramic clays. The molds can be placed on a heat source to dry, and can even be placed in an oven or toaster oven. The silicone material is safe to 500F.

The molds have flat bottoms to make filling them easy, or they can be used as stampers or to create a collage. The photo shows a silver clay piece made directly from the mold. The sample has been antiqued with Patina Gel and given a matte finish with a Scotchbrite wheel. A Scotchbrite pad would give the same finish.

How to fill or "pack" the mold
Form a ball that is approximately 1/3 the diameter of the mold. Shape the ball into a teardrop shape. Press the pointy end of the ball firmly into the center of the mold. Press the clay downward and outward, using the tip or side of your finger in a roller-like fashion. A knuckle also works well if the mold is not too small. This will move the clay to the outside edges of the mold. Continue pressing downward and outward until the clay is evenly packed in the mold. Don't worry if some of the clay begins to push out beyond the edges. Trim the excess with a needle tool or scraper, being careful not to cut the mold. The clay can be left to dry in the mold or peeled away wet. For BRONZclay, the mold can also be placed in the freezer to dry to avoid distortion.

Another method of filling a mold is to roll a slab of clay. This method works well on shallow molds. Look at the mold and determine the thickness of clay needed. The slab should be a little thicker than you want the resulting part to be. Trim the slab to the approximate size of the mold. Press the slab into the mold starting in the center and working outward to the edges. The excess clay can be trimmed with a needle tool held parallel to the mold. The clay can be left to dry in the mold or peeled away wet.

Making a wet impression
There may be times you want to de-mold the part while it is wet so you can crop or cut out a certain area. This is easy to do as long as the mold is fairly shallow. The mold and the clay can usually just be peeled away from each other. If the mold is domed, I sometimes put my thumb in it and press to get the clay to stick to my finger and then peel the mold away to keep it from deforming.

Drying molded clay
Metal clay can be left to dry in the mold. There is no danger of the clay sticking, so do not use a release agent. Allow 24 hours to dry before demolding if you dry it at room temperature. Allow 1 hour if using a heat source such as a candle/cup warmer. Do not place on surfaces hotter than 350F.

Dried parts pop out of the molds easily.  If parts are not completely dry before you attempt to demold, you can distort the image or break the clay. Be patient. It's best to simply allow it to dry thoroughly or use a low temperature heat source for hurry-up drying.

Using the molded parts

Refine the cast parts using diamond needle files, sandpaper or a craft knife as you desire before firing.
Drill holes for adding links or dangles.
Drill holes in the dry parts using stone setting burs and dry set gemstones for accent.

Try molding in PMC3 or PMC Plus for one size and PMC Standard for a smaller size from the same mold.
Demold the part wet and cut out shapes.
Use small pieces of clay to mold small areas for mosaics and findings
Add the dried parts to wet or dry metal clay with paste or syringe.
Add additional metal clay elements to build a new design.
